TESTIMONIAL OF AN ALPHA DEVOTEE

Rachel Ferris When I first read the audition notice for Alpha, I thought it sounded amazing, but one of these things that was either too good to be true or not something I'd ever be able to get into. I mean, a professional touring rock musical for kids! I assumed people like me (always getting told at auditions that I'm too tall, too fat, not 'commercial' enough, etc) would never be cast in a show as amazing as that. But, heart on my sleeve, I turned up at the audition (nervous as hell!), and was first introduced to the Alpha ensemble. I was quickly made at ease by the happy and relaxed group, and did my pieces feeling far better than I generally do. I left thinking these guys seemed awesome, but assuming I'd never hear anything back.

A couple of months later, I got a call as I was coming out of a movie, saying I'd been cast as Trombone in Cinderella! Once I stopped jumping up and down screaming in the middle of the foyer, I started to slightly worry about what was coming. I'd never lived away from home for more than 5 days, and I was about to embark on a 2 month stint away from my friends and family. What if I couldn't cut it?

I shouldn't have worried. My 2 months with Alpha was the best time of my life. I was welcomed with open arms (literally, I remember getting massive hugs from Ben & Katja when I first saw them!). Everyone went out of their way to make me feel at home, but didn't coddle me - I grew as a person and learnt that I'm a lot more independent than I gave myself credit for. I can attribute a lot of my personal growth in this time to the cast's attitude towards personal development and the human consciousness (a little hard to explain in something this brief, but trust me, it changes you!). Also the closed eye segment in Cinderella was amazing, I used to do it occasionally backstage and am positive it contributed to me being able to stand on my own.

Anyway, onto the show itself - the feeling you get while performing an alpha show is indescribable. The huge wave of energy that comes to you from the kids is overwhelming, and leaves you with a massive high that lasts the rest of the day! Knowing that you're a part of a show that is not only entertaining, but teaching the kids life skills that can change the very course of their development is phenomenal. Plus, you get to make people laugh every day (not just the kids, teachers and parents were hanging on our every word!). I truly think it has to be the best acting job you can get.

But some of the best times I had with Alpha weren't when we were performing. I adored my castmates, and so many times I went to sleep with a sore stomach from laughing! There was one time when we got a flat tire and the 6 of us (after some rather poor attempts to fix it ourselves) were huddled in the van, telling stories and scoffing down emergency chips... strange to say, but it really bonds you as a group and turned out to be a great time! Some other memorable times include strawberry picking in Hahndorf, doing play readings in the lounge room of our rented house, going out to see the opening night of Indiana Jones (and singing the theme incessantly the next day!), and this awesome jam session in an abandoned school music room with the boys playing instruments & us girls dancing & singing. I'd write about our wondrously drunken night out in Adelaide... but quite frankly I can't remember half of it. Besides, what goes on tour stays on tour!

"If you're thinking about auditioning for an Alpha show, do it - not only will you meet some amazing people, but it might just change your outlook on life!"

Ashley Weidner I Love Alpha Because...

Working for Alpha really is indescribable, but I will do my best to describe the phenomenal, fantastic, exciting, fun, exhilarating, electrifying and one of the most memorable moments of my life... That is if I didn't already give you some clue as to how amazing I found the WHOLE experience!

My "Alpha experience" started right from my audition. This really was the best audition I have ever been to. Without question! The Alpha Ensemble were so friendly and just gave out this amazing positive energy and embodied everything I had read the company stood for.

I started working for Alpha as an eighteen year old straight out of school. Needless to say, my excitement about starting was accompanied by a truckload of anxiety as not only was this my first professional acting job and I desperately wanted to do my best , but I was also moving from Sydney to Melbourne for a few months and I had never lived away from home before. However after arriving on my first day and meeting everyone in the cast I knew I had nothing to worry about... and I have never been more right!

I loved every minute of working for Alpha, if you can call something that enjoyable work!!! Performing everyday to children and seeing their enjoyment as they experience (not just watch, I don't think it is possible to just watch an Alpha Show), the show, for me there was nothing better. Being a part of something so positive and special that brings enjoyment and laughter and also values education to children really was a blessing.

I made so many amazing friends through working for Alpha, and grew not only as a performer but in all aspects of life. Ben along with the whole ensemble was always willing to help me in whatever I needed and go the extra mile to support and challenge me further with new and exciting tasks and ideas. There is no such thing as a boring day when working for Alpha. Alpha is such a unique and amazing company, they are my second family and I love them all so much, and would jump at the opportunity to work for them again.

- Hayley Fielding: Studied drama for eight years, Scholarship student at The McDoonald College of the Performing Arts (2006 and 2007), studied dance for 14 years (jazz, tap, contemporary), vocal tuition with Leah Cassar for 5years; Played Abu and Scooter in 2008.

Ashley Weidner Alpha Shows is a unique company, I believe, in the Australian entertainment industry. It focusses not only on the well being and growth of performers on stage, but also on their growth off stage. During my time with the company, (which I came to with basically no training in anything) I have performed many roles on stage, and also been able to direct, write, help with the audition process and various other tasks. It is more through these extra activities that I have found where my passion lies and what I believe lies at the heart of any great theatrical production. To work a job every day (which is, lets face it, ridiculous!!! Dressing up as a crocodile???) that you love and that grows your spirit, as well as your talent, is a blessing.

On top of that, you get to see every day the massive impact that theatre, and these shows especially, has on an audience is a special and moving experience. To see a child who really believes they can be a hero like Hercules whenever they want, or stand up to the bully like Quasimodo, or choose to believe something better like the Beast, is something that you don't forget, and makes you realise why we really perform.

The excitement of working for a company that is growing and changing every day is a joy and a challenge, though in my experience the two aren't mutually exclusive! To overcome challenges, especially in an industry like ours, is the greatest joy I have experienced in my last few years with Alpha Shows. When it comes down to it though, we are here for the audience, for the one boy who is told he can't perform because "it's for girls"; for the girl who dreams of being a dancer but is told she doesn't have the right body; and for the group of children in rural Australia that will probably NEVER leave their town and NEVER see anything like this ever again.

- Ashley Weidner: 3 years experience with Alpha Shows, Alpha Ensemble Member, Resident Director and performer in every single Alpha Show produced to date.

Toby Wilkins I undertook a two month tour of Cinderella with Alpha Shows in 2006. I have since worked with Theatre In Education companies throughout Australia and as a professional actor have always found work in this field. I attribute a great deal of my success to Alpha. Ben Jackson and the Alpha team gave me my very first acting job out of university and ignited a passion for performing for children which I have focussed my career on ever since. The show was wonderfully well written with an amazing depth of theatrical devices and characters. The tour was also directed so that everyone had a role which made everyone feel needed within the team. I myself got to drive the truck (I mean how cool is that!) and set the lights and sound before every performance. This gave me the opportunity to see my role go beyond my character and made me feel even more involved in the creation of the show.

I was given a huge amount of room to play with my character. I never felt uncomfortable with what I could acheive on stage and always felt supported by everyone in the team. Of course sometimes there were early mornings and long days but there was always such a support from the group that I felt more alert, fit, awake and encouraged during my tour then I have in any TIE work I have undertaken since.

Alpha gave me more time to focus on my performance and so I can say with confidence that some of the best shows I have ever done (and I've done a few) were with Alpha. If given the opportunity (again... sorry Ben) I would work for Alpha in a heartbeat. It is one of the most motivated, friendly, supportive and professional companies I have ever worked with. I loved the people, I loved the kids, I loved the shows and I loved my characters. Alpha may well be the best TIE company in Australia!

Chantal Bui Viet Being in an Alpha show was a truly amazing experience. It helped me to grow and mature both as a performer and as a person. Alpha Shows produces theatre that is both innovative and effective in teaching values to children. Not only this, it also has a profound effect on the actors involved in an Alpha production. Alpha promotes positive thinking and positive behaviour and you can't help but live all that Alpha teaches. The Alpha environment is a nurturing one where you feel safe and free to express yourself and grow as a performer. It is a truly mind-blowing experience and a thrill to be involved.

Belinda Howe Alpha is one of the greatest performance experiences I have ever had! Being a princess has always been a childhood fantasy and to actually perform two shows a day as Sleeping Beauty was an amazingly magical experience. Hundreds of excited and screaming children, the music pumping, adrenalin running high...need I say more!!

Not only did I get to perform but I also learnt how to operate the lighting, the sound, as well as assembling and dismantling the set which is priceless knowledge to a performer. Oh and the van. Yes that big orange Alpha van...the fun, the sing-a-longs, the naps after a busy day. It's like one big road trip with the Alpha team that comes fully equipped with a chocolate coated performance at the end!!

Performing to children was one of the most rewarding experiences I had with Alpha! They are an incredibly energetic audience who are both encouraging and appreciative throughout the performance and of course during question time. I'd do it all over again just to hear that blonde little prep in the front row ask me "Are you and Prince Jamie really married?" to which I replied "no we're just friends" to which she sat wide eyed with shock and blatantly responded "but you can't kiss unless you're married!"

The girls truly believed that I was a princess and for that magical few hours a day I felt just like one.

Alpha helped me grow as a performer and as a member of a team as I learnt how important it was to support my fellow performers. I made some great friends and have some unforgettable memories of my time with Alpha..1,2,3 you rock!!

Mark Sipple Working with Alpha was one of the best experiences I've ever had! Not only did I meet and work with some great people on the shows, but I also learned about how to successfully perform to the most hardcore of all critics - kids! I gained valuable performance skills and also learned a lot about mounting a touring show. Above all, touring with Alpha is really fun and I would recommend it to any actor looking for a challenging and rewarding experience.

- Mark Sipple: Graduate of Theatre Nepean NSW.

Jen Stirk Working for Alpha Shows was an experience I will always remember. Not only is it the most rewarding thing you will do performing for children, seeing ther faces light up and get involved... you come away from the tour with great friends and memories you will keep forever. The children learn so much from the shows and its apparent that they look up to the performers and some of the things they say to you after the show will touch your heart. I learnt alot about myself on the first tour and wouldn't hesitate to be part of an Alpha Show again!

- Jen Stirk: Graduate of the Ballarat Arts Academy 2006.

Laura Wilson Alpha is an experience. It is not just a job, it is a lifestyle. When on tour you eat, breath and sleep Alpha!

As an Actor, Alpha blesses us with a wide range of characters that cover our skills as talented actors, dancers and singers. It is a beautiful thing to practise your craft each day, and overcoming those fears that you cannot perform at 9.15 in the morning. You do it because you can, and never will I get scared over a 9am audition again! Alpha uses a wide range of music in their shows, pop, rock, musical theatre, ballads, and it is wonderful to be able to explore each musical style in your performance each day. Characters are all big and larger than life, whether it's the wide-eyed realism of a principal girl, to a crazy over the top fairy godmother - I have been most fortunate to be able to play a large variety of characters which I believe has given me greater confidence in my abilities as an actor.

As a Kindergarten Teacher, I believe that Alpha creates valuable theatre, developed exclusively to children's interests and learning styles. Children learn best through play, through observing and showing empathy for others, through using their bodies and through positive interactions with both their peers and adult role models. And I am very proud to say that Alpha caters to all of these and more! The vibe and energy in a school after a performance is vastly different from when we entered the school that morning. Children are energetic, enthusiastic, inquisitive, and expressive. Their adoration for us is a beautiful thing to watch, as is their conversations of what they learned or what they loved about the show. Watching children moved to take risks, like getting up on stage and proposing to the principal girl (!), is heart warming as you realise that we can really make a difference to the children we visit.

As a Person, someone striving for growth and contribution than there is no other job I have ever had that allows me to contribute in a more rewarding and fun way. Alpha is more than rocking up to a venue putting on a little show and going off again. If you want to do that, then quite honestly go somewhere else, Alpha is not for you. But if, like me, you are interested in growing and giving and caring about something that transcends yourself, then what an amazing thing to be a part of. There is nothing more fulfilling than working with a like minded group of people to give their best everyday. In fact the skills you learn offstage almost eclipse your on-stage performance. Learning to work in a team, taking pride in putting together the set, packing the van, operating the sound and lights, spending time talking with children after the show, these are all parts of the job that make Alpha unique and special.

You get out of Alpha what you put into it, your opinions are valued, your ideas are enthusiastically heard. My Alpha experience is something I treasure greatly and I acknowledge it for the life changing experience it truly is!

- Laura Wilson: Qualified Kindergarten teacher and Alpha Ensemble since 2005
